The cover for a flatbed scanner usually is made of sturdy plastic. It is attached by a hinge at the back of the scanner housing and covers the document scanning bed. A foam-like padding, coated with a plastic film, lines the inside of the cover. This padding gently holds the document flat against the glass scanning bed. It also prevents the hard plastic of the cover from making contact with the scanning bed as it could break or mar the glass.
